Day of Service

Oconomowoc High School and Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce Collaboration

October 15th, 2024

A key component of Oconomowoc Area School District’s Graduate Profile includes preparing students to be global citizens. This entails helping students grow as service-minded individuals who are empowered to think globally and act locally. A global citizen embraces diversity and humanitarianism while demonstrating awareness and empathy. Towards that end, OHS engages all of our freshmen in a service learning project. We are planning for service learning projects to take place on October 15th, 2024 from about 11 am – 2pm.

Business Partnership Opportunities:

The Oconomowoc High School and Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce are partnering for a Day of Service, an event in which Chamber businesses and students work together on a service learning project to give back to our community.  Ways you can participate include the following:

  1. Host a service learning project at your business! This is a great way for students to learn more about your company and an easy way for your own employees to participate. (To host one of our projects this year or to sign up with your company’s own project ideas for next year’s Day of Service, please contact Kyla Stefan at stefank@oasd.org)
  2. Make a financial donation to support materials and supplies for the projects. https://oconomowoc.revtrak.net/ohs/ohs-fundraisers/

Thank you for helping make this event a success!

Create friendship bracelets and greeting cards to place in care packages for people in Waukesha County who are undergoing cancer treatments.

Students will create original children’s books, appropriate for students in grades 1-6. The books will be translated by Spanish Honor Society students. We will possibly work with 1st or 2nd graders at an elementary school.

We will tour the HAWS center in Waukesha to learn about the Humane Animal Welfare Society’s mission.  While at the center we will be making dog treats and kongs for our furry friends!

Students will create cards or art and then will walk to Azura Memory Care (adjacent to the OHS campus) to lead residents in a sing-a-long of familiar tunes, folk songs, patriotic songs, songs from musicals, “oldies,” and traditional hymns. Students will socialize with the residents and share artwork and cards for the residents to keep.

We will be walking to the VFW local veterans to learn about needs in our community and among active service members throughout the world. We will be filling and sending care packages for troops and writing letters of support and encouragement to both active service members and veterans.

We will be spending the day outdoors at the Neighborhood House Nature Center in Neosho, WI. There will be several projects
related to restoring wildlife habitat including tree planting, collecting prairie seeds, and more.

For this project you’ll be helping clean up yards for some local Oconomowoc citizens.

Connect to our school community and work in collaboration to paint and continue a “growth” mural.

We will be working in partnership with the WDNR fisheries crew on habitat work at Rosenow Creek behind NHI.

Help construct wood duck houses, bat houses, and perhaps birdhouses for our friends that fly!

After you write a letter or two to active military members at Whelans Coffee & Ice Cream, you will walk to Veterans Memorial Park where you will hear from U.S. military veterans! Afterwards, will be a Q&A about their experiences while serving our country!

Play bingo/board games with our friends at a Long term care facility. To provide companionship and good cheer!

Organizing storage area, shed, and possibly take a tour.

Sign up for this outdoor environmental project.

Help serve lunch and learn about careers in hospitality.
Help clean up and do yard work for seniors in the community.
