The story began in 1982 when Jim O’Connor, often referred to as the founding father of the business, opened the original O’Connor Auto in Lomira. The Oconomowoc location followed in 2013, bringing that same philosophy and customer-first mindset to the community. Jim and Sue O’Connor were thrilled to bring the business they love to the community they have lived in since the late 70’s.
Today, the family-owned business is led by Laura O’Connor and Geoff Wold, but the founding principles remain unchanged. The team stands firmly behind every vehicle they sell and maintains high standards for the cars that make it onto their lot. One guiding belief they live by is simple but powerful: don’t let a concern become a complaint because there’s always something you can do first.
That approach has earned them an incredible level of loyalty. Each month, 70–80% of their business comes from repeat customers and referrals, something the team never takes for granted.
Their commitment to customer comfort is also reflected in the design of their office. Every customer can see both a window and a clock, a thoughtful detail meant to ensure visitors never feel “trapped” the way they may have felt in past car-buying situations.
Beyond the dealership, the O’Connor team believes strongly in giving back. They support several local nonprofits and have a long-standing relationship with Oconomowoc Silver Streak. Laura currently serves on the board, and even before her time in leadership, all of the vehicles used by Silver Streak have come from O’Connor Auto.
In recognition of his decades of dedication to the community, the City of Oconomowoc proclaimed Jim O’Connor Day on March 17, 2023, honoring Jim’s reputation and advocacy for the Oconomowoc area for more than 40 years. But that is certainly not the only recognition they have received. In 2021, Jim O’Connor Auto was named the Small Business of the Year by the Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce.
