Today’s Chamber Check In was at an Oconomowoc staple: the Oconomowoc Area Historical Societly and Museum. Home to have 50,000 objects, the museum connects with over 2,000 people each year through museum visits, research services, lectures, workshops, field trips and more. Run by 2 staff members and over 80 dedicated volunteers, the Historical Society is a not-so-hidden gem in our community.

Director Justin Agar-Pratt gave the Chamber’s Kelly Webster a personal tour of the building, which was once an Armory. Almost 100 years ago, in 1926, Oconomowoc’s first museum was established in the storage area above the city’s original library. The City of Oconomowoc deeded the Armory building to the Oconomowoc Area Historical Society & Museum in 1988 with the stipulation that the museum be opened within five years. The organization exceeded its goal, opening its doors on June 29, 1991.

Members of the Oconomowoc Area Historical Society enjoy free and discounted admission to programs, member-exclusive programs, free research services, and discounted gift shop sales. For the remainder of this Sesquicentennial year, visitors can explore the special exhibit, Oconomowoc in 150 Objects. Throughout the museum, you’ll find artifacts paired with stories that highlight how each one helped shape Oconomowoc’s past. Don’t miss the chance to see this exhibit before the end of 2025!

The museum is a unique treasure in Oconomowoc, offering a special space to preserve Oconomowoc’s History, and they have big plans for what they can contribute to the community in the years ahead. In early 2026, don’t miss their special exhibit on Winter Sports in Oconmowoc. Dedicated to their community partners, OHS also has several strategic partnerships in the works, making the future bright. The Oconomowoc Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the Oconomowoc Area Historical Society & Museum to host our Historic Boat Tours each summer.

Like many buildings in the area that are over 100 years old, the building could use some TLC. Oconomowoc Area Historical Society & Museum has launched a $1 million capital campaign to preserve the landmark, expand access to local history, and ensure the museum continues as a vibrant, welcoming resource for generations to come. Check out their plans, goals, and learn how you can contribute on their website.
